Aldo Montano is a fencer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Italy.

From Olympic gold to reality TV star, Aldo Montano has run the gamut of opportunities afforded to popular sports figures. And while he has been criticized for an inconsistent dedication to this sport, Montano seems to be on top of his game once again at age 33. After early exits at the Beijing Games and the 2010 World Championships, the 2004 sabre gold medalist returned to the top of the podium at the 2011 World Championships in his native country. With other strong Italians by his side, look for the Livorno native to contend for a medal in the team event in addition to the individual competition.

Entering Athens as the reigning Olympic champion and 2007 world silver medalist, Montano had his sights set on the podium again, but was upset in the round of 16 by Spain's Jorge Pina 15-14. In an ironic twist of fate, the eventual gold medal winner, China's Zhong Man, was coached by Montano's Athens coach, Christian Bauer. A few days later, Montano recovered from his early exit to help lead the Italian team to a bronze medal, his third Olympic medal.

Montano's title match in Athens was one for the ages as Montano constantly fought from behind against Hungary's Zsolt Nemcsik. After falling behind 5-1 early on, Montano battled back several times to draw even. At one point, he received a yellow card for arguing with the referee, then appeared to stall by changing a glove after taking a late lead. Eventually winning the tight bout, 15-14, Montano danced around the stage, did a somersault and jumped into the arms of his coach. His accomplishment was witnessed by the former president of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who was at the match fulfilling a promise he had made to Montano earlier in the year when the two had met in Italy.

By winning gold in Athens, Montano added his own chapter to the Montano family's Olympic tradition. His father, Mario Aldo Montano, had won a gold and two silver medals in the team sabre event between 1972 and 1980. Before then, Aldo's grandfather, also named Aldo Montano, had won a silver medal in the team event in 1936 and 1948. Three of his father's cousins were also former Olympic medalists. The younger Aldo's gold medal was Italy's first in men's sabre since 1924 and Italy's 101st in Olympic fencing.

After his Athens success, Montano became a popular figure in Italy: he could be seen on the covers of gossip magazines with then-girlfriend, Manuela Arcuri, an actress and model, and then on the television screen when he gained a role in the hit Italian reality show, La Fattoria or The Farm. In the show, contestants are taken out of plush lifestyles and put to work on a farm, where they must complete tasks each week to improve the farm. Viewers then vote to eliminate one contestant after each episode and Montano was voted off about midway through the series in Week 6. The Rome resident says he enjoyed working in the entertainment business and hopes to become more involved when his fencing career is over.
