a few other instruments, including banjo, bass and drums. She has won a number of local songwriting contests. She finds her musical inspiration in Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, Garth Brooks, The Band Perry and Taylor Swift. Gómez is the lead singer of The Alexis Gómez Band and also sings for a variety of bands in Nashville on the Broadway strip.

Gómez is currently a senior student at Wright State University, where she is studying to be a Spanish teacher. She is one of the worship leaders at SouthBrook Christian Church in Miamisburg, Ohio, her home church since she was a child.

Here is an interview with Alexis:

When did you first start singing?

Like most people will say, I have been singing forever. Whether it was at my church or with my family band, music and singing have always been a part of my life! But my first "official" gig outside of church was when I was nine years old with my dad at a place called Coffee Affair in my hometown!
What role does music play in your life?

For me, music, and especially song writing, has become the number one means of communication and expressing myself in life. When I'm going through something, I can write and sing about it better than I can talk about it sometimes. And in the same breath, when someone is going through something in their life, sometimes my music can reach them better than just my words alone. Sometimes it's happiness and sometimes it's sorrow but either way, it's a way to connect with everyone. Music plays a huge role in my life and no matter where I go it will always be with me.
What makes you unique?

I think what makes me unique is that as a country artist I can bring something to the industry and genre that no one is doing right now — by incorporating Spanish and my culture into country music and connecting with mi gente latina!
Do you have a wish list of writers you'd like to write with? If so, who?

Garth Brooks, Kacey Musgraves and Keith Urban.
What are your top three all-time favorite songs and why?

"Callin Baton Rouge" by Garth Brooks. This song is my go-to number one. I can't remember loving or having more fun dancing and singing with this song and come on — who can't get into that fiddle!!

"Better Dig Two" by Band Perry. I love songs that tell stories and to me this song is awesome because it's current but unique and so well written. I would want to make this kind of music one day.

"Something in the Water" by Carrie Underwood. This song is one I love because of the message. I just think there is something awesome about singing a song that has an influence and message like this one with preaching to somebody. I just want to meet people where they are and if that's listening to country music- not Christian or going to church- that would be awesome.
What is your strongest musical strength?

I think my strongest musical strengths are my vocals and my performance. Ain't no shame in being an entertainer in my book!
What is your greatest musical weakness?

My biggest weakness is probably my head! I worry about everything too much and try to be a perfectionist — which hurts me sometimes. Especially worrying about my voice and its health.
Who are your top three favorite and most influential artists? What is it about your favorite artists that you are drawn to?

1. Garth Brooks — amazing songwriter, singer and entertainer. His energy and ability to connect with a crowd is a gift and I always try to watch and learn from him.

2. Taylor Swift — Her talent as a songwriter and entertainer is something I look up to. You can say what you want but this girl has created a bond with her fan base that is unbreakable and I want people to love my music and believe in me enough to follow my music wherever I decide to take it.

3. Martina McBride — talk about amazing vocalist. Since I was little this woman has been the one I look up to most. Her voice is perfect and the work she put in to get where she is is inspiring to me. She also sings songs that touch people and I love that.
If you had to pattern your career after another artist, who would it be and why?

The Band Perry because I love their style and their ability to make county music with a modern twist. Sometimes it can be a little dark but they still tell amazing stories. Plus I love that they seem to have stayed true to themselves so far.
Why do you think you should be the next "American Idol"?

I think I'm the next American Idol because I feel like I can be unique as a county artist and incorporate my Hispanic culture in order to bridge the gap between country music and the Hispanic population! There isn't anyone in county music who does that right now and I think "American Idol" would give me an amazing platform to do so!
