Aliya Mustafina is a gymnast competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Russia. She is the 2010 world all-around champion.

Aliya Mustafina returned to competition in December 2011 after tearing her ACL just eight months earlier. Albeit watered down routines, she competed on all four apparatus. Her first significant meet back was the 2012 Russian Championships in March where she won the all-around title and a gold medal on the uneven bars. "I'm not afraid of getting injured again," she told the press. "I'm nervous ahead of competitions, but that's just normal. I've already completely forgotten about what happened in Berlin."

As the overwhelming favorite to win her first European title in 2011, Mustafina was on track, winning the qualifying round in Berlin by more than three points. On her first event of the all-around finals, vault, she attempted the difficult Amanar (Yurchenko two-and-a-half). Mustafina tore her left ACL on the landing, hopping on one foot before being carried off the podium. She was forced to withdraw from Europeans and needed surgery. Mustafina missed 2011 Worlds, the primary qualifying event for the 2012 Games.

Mustafina arrived at her first world championships as the favorite, and delivered. She won the 2010 world all-around title and helped her team win its first gold as independent Russia. Mustafina also reached all four apparatus finals and won silver medals in three events (vault, bars, floor).

If she is able to regain the Amanar vault on which she injured her knee — Mustafina has no real weakness — she performs a difficult, yet graceful bar set, and manages both power and elegance on beam and floor. When Mustafina qualified for all four event finals at 2010 Worlds, she was first gymnast to accomplish that feat since Svetlana Khorkina in 1997.

When her coach Deena Kamalova left Russia for Texas, the legendary Aleksandr Aleksandrov stepped in as Mustafina's coach. Aleksandrov coached Soviet greats like Dmitry Bilozerchev and Svetlana Boginskaya. In 1993, he moved to Texas before returning to Russia in 2008 and becoming the head coach of the Russian women's team.

Mustafina and Russian teammate Viktoria Komova are regarded as two gold medal threats for the women's all-around title at the 2012 London Olympics. Komova won the premiere Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and the world all-around silver medal in 2011. The two have not yet met in major international competition.

Her father, Fargat Mustafin, is the 1976 Olympic bronze medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling. Mustafina's younger sister, Naliya, is also an elite gymnast in Russia. Aliya began gymnastics at six years old with her sister, who was four.

Mustafina says she has no idols, but does admire 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin for her elegance while performing difficult routines.
