Anthony Ervin is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

At the 2000 Games in Sydney, when Anthony Ervin tied for gold with fellow American Gary Hall Jr., he became the first swimmer of African-American descent to make the U.S. Olympic swimming team, and then, the first swimmer of African-American descent to win Olympic gold (but not the first black swimmer to do so: Anthony Nesty of Suriname won the 1988 gold and the 1992 bronze in the 100m butterfly, and Cuba's Neisser Bent, won the bronze in the 100m backstroke in 1996.).

Nine years after retiring from the sport in 2003, and 12 years removed from his only Olympics, at age 31, Ervin qualified for his second Olympic team by finishing second in the 50m free at the U.S. Trials in Omaha. He was just .01 behind Cullen Jones, and Ervin's 21.60 was the third best time in the world this year. During the semifinal in Omaha, Nathan Adrian had to tell Ervin his time, because Ervin wasn't wearing his contacts for the swim. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he tied with Gary Hall Jr., for gold in the 50m free and earned silver in the 4x100m free relay. He then won the 50m free and 100m free at the 2001 World Championships, but retired from the sport in 2003.

In 2003, Ervin retired from competitive swimming. He spent several years traveling around the world and exploring other interests, including higher education, music, tattoos, teaching people all over the world about swimming and tsunami flood relief. He is currently finishing his masters degree at U.C. Berkeley in "sport, culture and education." In 2006, Ervin went to New York City, where he spent much of the next four years living in Brooklyn, jamming with a rock band and teaching children to swim at Imagine, a Tribeca based swimming school co-founded by a former Cal teammate Lars Merseburg and Canadian swimming Olympian Casey Barrett. But then in 2010 he returned to the Bay Area and met another group of kids at a swim club in Oakland, and these combined experiences helped lead him back to the sport as an athlete.

Ervin auctioned his 2000 Olympic gold medal to aid the 2004 tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia, garnering $17,101 for it on eBay. He now says he was a "mystic" at the time.

His father, Jack, is ¾ African-American and ¼ Native American. His Jewish mother, Sherry, is white. When being prodded the by the press about being a role model for black youth, said, "I don't think of myself as a race. I hope to be a role model for everybody, black, white or brown."
