Ato Essandoh stars in "Copper" on BBC America as Doctor Matthew Freeman, who secretly assists Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones) with his work.

After graduating with a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University, Ato Essandoh eventually found himself in New York studying at the Acting Studio. Since then, he's been seen on stage in the critically acclaimed productions of "Streamers" at the Roundabout Theatre, "Mother Courage and Her Children" with Meryl Streep at the Public, and "Death of a Salesman: at Yale Rep. He most recently played the lead in John Guare's classic play, "Six Degrees of Separation," at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, receiving a host of stellar reviews for his performance.

Essandoh's film credits include "Hitch," starring Will Smith, "Blood Diamond," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, "Nights in Rodanthe," opposite Diane Lane and Richard Gere, "Prime" with Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, and a hilarious turn as Natalie Portman's adopted brother Titembay in "Garden State." On television, he played a recurring role in "Damages" and has been seen in episodes of "Blue Bloods," "Treme," "White Collar," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "Royal Pains," "Law & Order," "Third Watch," "Royal Pains," and "Chappelle's Show," among others.

Essandoh is the co-founder of the Defiant Ones, a writing and performance group, and one of his plays was published in the venerable Plays & Playwrights collection in 2003.
