Bill Brochtrup stars in "Major Crimes" in TNT in the recurring role of Dr. Joe Bowman, Rusty's therapist who used chess as a way to get through to his client.

Bill Brochtrup is best known for playing John Irvin, the cheerful administrative aide, on ABC TV's Emmy Award-winning police drama, "NYPD Blue." Along with the rest of the cast, he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble.

Brochtrup has been on television shows as varied as "Dexter," "Without a Trace," "The Wild Thornberrys," as the voice of a dolphin, and Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown," in which he suffered a humiliating defeat, and was a series regular on two other Steven Bochco shows, CBS sitcom "Public Morals" and ABC drama "Total Security." Brochtrup recently appeared in Jon Avnet's web series, "Kendra," and recurred on Showtime's "Shameless."

Brochtrup's film work includes "Life as We Know It," "He's Just Not That Into You," "Duck," "Ravenous" and "Space Marines."

Onstage Brochtrup has appeared in New York, Los Angeles, and in repertory theaters throughout the country. He is the Co-Artistic Director of The Antaeus Company, Los Angeles' acclaimed classical theater ensemble.

He is a frequent guest host of the PBS newsmagazine "In the Life," has told his original comic stories at numerous Spoken Word events, and has written for Out magazine and the best-selling collection of essays "I Love You, Mom!" Brochtrup has hosted AIDS Walks across the country, is an SPCA "Friend for Life," and has spent numerous holidays abroad with the USO and Armed Forces Entertainment, visiting Troops in the Persian Gulf, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Germany, Japan, Bosnia, and Kosovo.
