"Black Gold" Season 4 on truTV is a reality series that follows the action and danger that roughneck crews face every day in the oil fields of Texas. They struggle against the elements, equipment and sometimes each other to bring in the next big gusher. And this year, they'll also have to face the ire of Peggy Hauser, a demanding landowner whose strict rules and regulations make life miserable for the men on the rig.

During "Black Gold" Season 1 in in 2008, crews put everything they had into erecting rigs and successfully finding crude before rivals could get to it. In "Black Gold" Season 2, Oilman Autry Stephens needed to save the lease on a very valuable piece of land before it expired. Despite constant danger and setbacks, the roughnecks of Rig 28 heroically completed their task of drilling four wells in 50 days, saving the lease and their jobs.

This year, as demand for oil continues to rise astronomically, scrutiny over the safety of drilling has never been more intense. Big Dog drilling has increased the number of operational rigs from four to 20 to meet the new demand. That means the workforce is stretched paper thin, and fewer skilled hands are available. Less experience means more danger for everybody. And as residents of the Gulf Coast discovered this summer, there is no room for mishap.

The crew of Big Dog Rig 28 must work through conflicts, handle dangerous equipment and balance pressures with their families as they lead the charge in the Permian Basin area of West Texas. Drilling on this untapped land could produce the best wells yet for Autry and his roughnecks. Usually, seismic data will guide drillers to a sure thing. But in this new drilling area, the results aren't certain. This means the roughnecks will have to "wild cat," relying on hope, instinct and luck to locate the big finds. If they fail, it will cost millions in lost time, putting the roughnecks' jobs—as well as their lives—on the line.

Complicating matters, the new drilling strategy also means Autry and the crew of Rig 28 have to deal with a new landowner named Peggy. With a fiery temper and a take-charge attitude, she wastes no time laying down the law in order to protect the integrity of her property. Enduring the rigors of drilling is one thing, but dealing with Peggy is a whole new ballgame.

As if Peggy's presence doesn't make life bad enough for the roughnecks, two of the men in charge of the rig get into a power struggle as they vie over a possible promotion. This causes conflicts among the rest of the crew as they all try to position themselves to move up the ladder.
