Brady Ellison is an archer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

As told by his mother on the website she dedicated to following Brady's archery career, Ellison's Olympic start began with one broken string. While at a camp in 2005, Ellison, who was a world-class compound archer (compound is not an Olympic discipline), had a malfunction with his equipment in the form of a snapped string. Unable to fix it, he waited for his parents to send along a backup bow. While waiting, a friend allowed him to use one of his recurve bows. Ellison used it, showcased a lot of talent and potential, and soon got on his path to the Olympics after talking with coaches, who convinced him to make the switch.

Ellison has become such an icon in the archery world that he even has his own signature wave that he does at competitions and crowds wave in return. While the wave is known as the "Brady wave," Ellison took the idea from Lane Frost, a bullrider who Ellison looks up to. "You just put your hands up and then it's straightforward," Ellison said when describing the wave. "It's not a side-to-side wave or a pageant wave or nothing like that."

Ellison got a tattoo of the Olympic rings and 'Beijing 2008' on his right forearm after he made the 2008 Olympic team, as a permanent reminder of that achievement. "I put it on my forearm because when I'm at full draw it would be in all the pictures," Ellison said. "It's just one of those things that you can only get if you're an Olympian."

When Ellison first moved to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., he acquired a nickname of 'Pup.' "I was 17 and the youngest person out there by three or four years. Long blond hair, kind of a goofy little kid, and everyone called me the pup and it stuck for a while. Once I became one of the older ones living at the training center it went away."

With the goal of having a shot at the London venue — or a similar version of it — Ellison is recreating the venue to the best of his ability, in his backyard. His backyard makeover includes putting up signage that makes it look like the Games and replicating the noise as best as possible.

While Ellison is the top archer in the world right now he too misses. "I have missed and shot into the Bosphorus Strait at the 2011 World Cup finals. It was super windy and that was kind of embarrassing. But I've never missed a shot and broken a window or done anything like that."

Ellison finished 27th in the 2008 Olympic individual competition and 10th in the team event. He learned a lot from Beijing and the competitions that came before and worked his way up to the top of the rankings over the next few years. Honing his craft, Ellison racked up a fourth place finish at a 2009 World Cup stop. He made a leap to the top of the podium in 2010 and earned an individual gold medal at the first World Cup of the year. Ellison also won gold and silver medals in the team events on the World Cup stage. He finished the year with another individual gold at the World Cup 2010 Final. In 2011, Ellison proved that he deserved to be the number one ranked archer in the world by winning individual gold at three of the four World Cup events, as well as the World Cup 2011 Final, and taking bronze at the 2011 World Archery Championships. He also earned four World Cup medals (three gold, one bronze) in the team event. Ellison goes into the 2012 London Games ranked first worldwide.
