Britta Steffen is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Germany.

Britta Steffen won double gold in Beijing, claiming both the 50m and 100m free gold medals. She also won both of those events at the 2009 Worlds in Rome. At the 2011 Worlds i Shanghai, she withdrew after a dismal showing in the heats of the 100m free, and withdrew from the rest of the meet. She did help Germany to third in the 4x100 free relay in Shanghai prior to her poor individual showing. "I gave everything — I had no more to give," Steffen said at the time. "I can't explain it. I would give you answers if I had them."

Steffen made her Olympic debut as a 16-year-old in Sydney, swimming the prelims of the 4x200m free relay and winning a bronze. She returned to the Olympics in Athens but was still a prelim swimmer, this time on the fourth-place 4x100m free squad. Steffen had her breakout event at the 2006 European Championships, where she won four gold medals, including the 50m free and 100m free and set three world records. In her world championship debut (2007), Steffen won bronze in the 100m free and placed fourth in the 50m free. She had a shoulder injury in 2008 and chose to skip the European Championships in order to focus on the German Olympic Trials.

Steffen says she swam the first 50 meters of the 100m free in Beijing with her eyes closed to avoid being distracted by her opponents. She came from behind to beat Libby Trickett of Australia and win gold.

Steffen suffered from several health problems in 2010, including shoulder issues and sinus inflammation. She missed the 2010 European Championships in Budapest due to bronchitis. She said she had so many ailments during 2010 that at no point during the year was she able to train for 10 days in a row.
