Buffi Jashanmal from "Project Runway" is one of the contestants in Season 9 of the Lifetime reality fashion design competition series. She is a 32-year-old designer who grew up in both London and Dubai and is currently living in New York City.
Buffi Jashanmal ("Project Runway") says that she's always been creative and artistic. In her teens she was interested in acting and theatrical makeup and hair. In her late teens she really got into fashion and styling. She has always liked to dress uniquely and a bit left of center, thanks to her mother. Buffi's cousin saw her sketches when she finished her first degree in English and Drama and suggested that she move to New York City to study fashion. Buffi received her AAS in Fashion Design at Parsons. Before that, she had taken two summer courses at the London College of Fashion.
Buffi considers her strengths to be that she is creative and unique. She likes to try new ideas and techniques and says that her sewing and pattern-making are both strong. She, however, thinks that she is too much of a passionate artist and needs to focus her designs with a customer in mind. She attributes her past failures to not having a strong enough vision of whom she is designing for.
Her designs are influenced by the theatrics and drama of the Ibiza and New York City clubbing scenes. She also always has fun female rappers in the back of her mind, like Rae Rae, Nicki Minaj, Barbie and Jem and the Holograms. Trailer trash, disco, the '80s ... it's just in her! While she's designing, Jashanmal likes listening to Florence and the Machine`s "Shake It Out," Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash, Lily Allen, Mazzy Star and David Bowie.
Buffi is most proud of having designed her signature circle top. Her favorite designers are Brian Lichtenberg, Carly Ellis, Mother of London, Patricia Field, Betsey Johnson and Prada. Something that sparkles is a fashion must for her. She says, "It'll bring any outfit to life and a smile to your face and anyone you pass by. Honest, it works." Her favorite style icons are Lady Gaga and Paula Yates, who was "awesome and trashy at the same time."
