Carli Lloyd is a soccer player competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

The hero of the 2008 Olympics, Carli Lloyd returns as a force in the middle of a crowded U.S. midfield.

Thanks to her star turn in Beijing, Lloyd was named the 2008 U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year, and parlayed that status to an ever bigger role in the team. In 2011, Lloyd led the U.S. in games played with 19 and minutes played with 1,654. She played all but 16 minutes at the 2011 World Cup, notching a goal and assist in addition to converting a penalty kick against Brazil in the quarterfinals.

Lloyd went from young upstart to woman of lore in a blink of an eye at the Beijing Olympics, thanks to her gold-medal-winning goal in extra time of the gold-medal match against Brazil. After a back pass from Amy Rodriguez, Lloyd unleashed a left-footed rocket that found the back of the net and put the U.S. up by the 1-0 margin they would ultimately win by. More than just giving the U.S. gold, the moment gave Lloyd a new world of confidence. "It was a moment of believing in myself too," Lloyd said about the goal. "I think I was still a little unsure of, 'Can I really compete at this level?' And once you find that in yourself, and you know you can believe in yourself, good things happen."

Carli Lloyd provides the U.S. women's national team with a strong attacking midfielder who is able to deliver dead-on service through the air to the likes of Abby Wambach or on the ground to Alex Morgan. She is extremely quick and loves to push the tempo in head coach Pia Sundhage's aggressive scheme. She's also proven to be a very capable goal-scorer from the midfield, with 26 goals since 2008.

In the final of the 2008 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament, Lloyd showed her brilliance in dead-ball situations. In the 107th minute of a scoreless affair, Lloyd was tackled fiercely from behind by Canada's Kara Lang in the attacking third. She lay on the turf in agony as the referee issued Lang a yellow card, then picked herself up and drilled a 28-yard free kick over the Canadian wall and past the goalkeeper to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. She sprinted to the bench, where she was engulfed by her joyful teammates. The Canadians would even it up before the Americans prevailed in a shootout.

Lloyd moved into a starting role in the center midfield in 2007. After scoring once in her first 24 matches, she scored four goals, one in each game, at the 2007 Algarve Cup in Portugal. In the final against Denmark, she fired a left-foot rocket from 35 yards that hit the under-side of the cross bar and bounced in, a goal she considered her best-ever as a member of the national team, before her iconic goal in Beijing. Lloyd was the tournament's top scorer and earned MVP honors.

Carli Lloyd trained with the U.S. women's team during the 2004 Olympic Residency Training Camp but was not called up for duty until July 2005 in a friendly against Ukraine. She scored her first goal in October 2006 against Chinese Taipei.

At Rutgers University, Lloyd became the first Scarlet Knight to earn First-Team All-Big East honors four times during her career (2001-2004). She finished as Rutgers' all-time leader in points (117) and goals (50). She earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Sport Studies.
