Chris Rene from "The X Factor" finished in third place overall in the FOX reality singing competition series behind winner Melanie Amaro and runner-up Josh Krajcik. Rene is a 28-year-old garbage collector from Santa Cruz, California. At his audition, he told the judges a story about his downward spiral into drug addiction. He said he finally got himself into rehab though and was happy to report that he was clean and sober for 70 days and counting.
For his audition in Seattle, Washington, Chris Rene ("X Factor") performed an original song all about his travails called "Young Homie." Nicole Scherzinger loved it and said, "I'm tripping on you," recalling a phrase from his song. Simon Cowell was even more impressed, saying it's "always my favorite feeling in the world when I sit in this chair and meet a star for the first time." All four judges voted yes to put Rene through to boot camp. He made it through the week and is competing in the boys category under the mentorship of L.A. Reid.
After surviving the week at the judges homes and making it into the top 17, he said, "The advice I have been getting is to stay original, stay yourself and do my thing and also go out of the box and do things that are difficult. The way I prepare is to stay in the moment, relax and practice as much as I can. Staying in the here-and-now is what is best for me."
In January 2012, Epic Records signed him to a recording deal. "I've dreamt about this momentous moment my whole life and now it's here," says Chris. "I'm more than honored to be an Epic artist. Working with L.A. Reid 'Big Homie' is a dream come true. He's a great man and I look forward to the opportunity to share my music with the world."
