Claire Hallissey is an athlete competing in track and field at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Great Britain. She is making her debut at the Games, where she will compete in the women's marathon.

Claire Hallissey began her career as a track runner but has since moved up in distance and onto the roads. She came into the 2012 Virgin London Marathon with two career races at the distance under her belt and in need of a fast time to supplant favorite Jo Pavey for the final spot on Britain's Olympic marathon team. She shrugged off any pressure and crossed the finish line 11th overall and as the top Briton in 2:27:44, a time which eclipsed Pavey's PR of 2:28:24 and landed her on the Olympic team. "I think it's still sinking in," Hallissey said. "It's a dream come true."

The spring road racing season proved fruitful for Hallissey in her buildup to the London Marathon. In March, after a stint of altitude training in Boulder, Colo., she finished 19th overall in the NYC Half, running 72:58. On April 1, she finished fifth in the Cherry Blossom Run in Washington, D.C., running a 10-mile personal-best of 54:37.

Hallissey kicked off her 2012 preparations by attending the high-altitude training camp in Kenya that was co-sponsored by UK Athletics and the London Marathon. After returning from Kenya, she traveled to Bristol, England where she attended her PhD graduation — she actually finished her doctorate studies in immunology in 2010. From there, she visited some family before competing in the Workingham Half-Marathon, finishing second to two-time Olympian Liz Yelling in 73:32. From there, it was more family visits and then post-altitude physiological testing in Loughborough before returning home to the United States.

Hallissey made her marathon debut in New York in 2010, finishing 18th in 2:36:13. A period of injuries followed but she returned to health in 2011 and competed in the Chicago Marathon, where she finished sixth in 2:29:27, a time which secured her the A qualifying standard for the Olympics. Hallissey, who earned her undergraduate degree in natural sciences from Cambridge, recuperated from her Chicago performance by spending two weeks exploring the rainforests of Costa Rica.

Hallissey was born in Watford, England, and completed all of her schooling there. About two years ago, she moved to the United States with her husband, Matt, whose job relocated him to the Washington, D.C. area. The couple resides in Arlington, Virginia.
