Dan Stevens stars in "Downton Abbey" on PBS as Matthew Crawley, the surprise heir of a distinguished title and estate that he'd rather not have.

One the UK's leading young actors, Dan Stevens had his "Masterpiece" debut on PBS in the role of the doomed hero battling the undead in "Dracula." Then he appeared as Edward Ferrars, a leading man with a happier fate, in Andrew Davies' adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility."

BBC's adaptation of Alan Hollinghurst's Booker Prize-winning novel, "The Line of Beauty," and roles in "The Turn of the Screw" and "Maxwell," also for the BBC. He recently shot the feature film "Vamps," starring alongside Sigourney Weaver, Alicia Silverstone and Krysten Ritter. This follows a predominantly German-speaking lead role in his first feature film, "Hilde," a bio picture of the German diva Hildegard Knef.

On stage, Stevens' credits include the lead role of Septimus Hodge in David Leveaux's hit production of Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia," and starring in Tom Stoppard and André Previn's "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" at the National Theatre. His other stage credits include "The Vortex" and "Hay Fever," both directed by Sir Peter Hall; "The Romans in Britain," directed by Samuel West; and "Much Ado About Nothing" and "As You Like It," again directed by Sir Peter Hall, the latter earning Stevens a nomination for an Ian Charleson Award, which rewards the best classical stage performances in Britain by actors aged under 30.
