Dana Vollmer is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Dana Vollmer qualified for her second Olympics by winning the 100m butterfly at Olympic Trials. She's one of the best 100m butterfly swimmers in the world and enters London among the favorites to win a gold medal. She'll also compete in the 4x200m freestyle relay and most likely the 4x100m medley relay.

Vollmer's international swimming career took off at an early age, as the Texas native qualified for the 2004 Olympic team. If that wasn't enough, the then 16-year-old won a gold medal with the 800m freestyle relay team at those Athens Games. The squad's time of 7:53.42 was a world record — although it has since been broken four times. Vollmer also placed sixth in the 200m freestyle in Athens.

At age 12, Vollmer was the youngest swimmer to ever compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2000. She did not make the team but swimming at such a high-profile meet soon became old news for the rising star, who swam at the Goodwill Games as a 13-year-old one year later. In 2003, Vollmer broke three meet records at the Pan-American Games in the 100m butterfly, 800m freestyle relay and the 400m medley relay.

Vollmer initially went to the University of Florida, but after one season she was convinced the swimming program would not fit her. She transferred to the University of California-Berkeley for her sophomore season and found plenty of success in the pool, ultimately finishing her career as a Golden Bear with four NCAA titles along with a team championship. She graduated in 2009.

After college, Vollmer opted to stay in California to train under Cal coach Terri McKeever, who in 2010 was named the head coach of the U.S. women's team for the 2012 London Olympics. Vollmer trains at the same pool in which she swam during her years as a student, along with fellow national teamer and 11-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin. The coach has guided Vollmer to a pool-full of success and accolades since her graduation, including silver and bronze medals at the 2009 World Championships and four gold medals and a silver at the 2010 Pan-Pacific Championships. Vollmer's top events are the 100m butterfly and the short (50m-200m) freestyle races.

Vollmer continued to flex her swimming muscles in 2011, when she won a pair of gold medals — 100m butterfly, 400m medley relay — at the World Championships. She also earned gold (100m butterfly) and bronze (100m freestyle) medals at the U.S. Championships.

In 2003 Vollmer noticed that her heart rate would not slow down after racing. At first she didn't think anything of it, but she had it checked out and discovered she had Supra Ventricular Tachyardia, a heart rhythm disorder that makes one's heart beat more than 100 times a minute at rest. Vollmer had surgery to correct the issue but when she went in for a checkup, doctors noticed she was showing signs of Long QT Syndrome. The inherited disorder "is when you have an electrical circuit in your heart that causes irregular beats," Vollmer explained in a 2008 article in the Daily Californian. Fainting, cardiac arrest and death can occur from Long QT, so the 15-year-old coped by having her mother tote around a portable defibrillator to all of her meets. Eventually the symptoms went away and doctors said she did not have the disorder.

Vollmer discovered in 2011 that she was allergic to gluten and eggs, forcing her to change up her eating habits. She often asks her Twitter followers for recipes, and she discovered a gluten- and egg-free pizza crust made in a California bakery. "I swear it tastes like normal pizza," Vollmer says. One of her biggest challenges is finding something to eat while traveling, so she always carries a bag of food containing nuts, gluten-free bars, fruit and other items.
