Dave Marciano from "Wicked Tuna" is one of the fishing captains featured in the National Geographic Channel reality docu-series. He is the captain of the Hard Merchandise.

The son of an insurance man from Beverly, Massachusetts, Captain Marciano started fishing at age 11 and never considered another trade. "I just took to the water," he says. "I got my first jobs on charter boats in Gloucester as a teenager. After high school, I got into it full time."

After high school, Marciano worked for a decade as a crewman in Key West and Gloucester before an employer spotted his obvious talents and "threw him the keys" to captain a boat. "I ran that boat, the Captain Vince II, for three seasons, and we did real well," he explains. "I saved enough money from my captain's share that I could buy my own boat."

The Hard Merchandise is the embodiment of blue-collar fisherman's Gloucester, from its 27-year-old hull to its hard-charging captain who looks more like a Harley Davidson rider than an old salt. It's not the fastest boat in the fleet, or the prettiest, but the Hard Merchandise is a legend in this town, thanks to the charismatic Captain Dave Marciano, who always manages to keep going even in the face of enormous hardship.

At the end of season 2, Marciano discovered the Hard Merchandise had sunk at the docks during the night. After a long, hard summer of repairs and rebuilding, his beloved boat is back to ship shape and ready to take on the competition.

"The end of last season, the boat sank at the dock," Marciano explains. "When I needed equipment or gear or something done, everybody was willing to help. It was a great feeling to know that when I was down, Gloucester had my back."
