DeObia Oparei stars in "Game of Thrones" on HBO as Areo Hotah, who is the long-serving captain of Doran Martell's palace guard, renowned for his loyalty and his longaxe.

DeObia Oparei's journey from childhood poverty to featuring in multi-million dollar Hollywood films is inspirational. The stresses and strains of immigrant living led to a childhood of foster care and children's homes. DeObia, however, was encouraged by a loving and doting mother to seek self-expression through theater, and at

the age of 7, was enrolled into acting class.

In 1987 DeObia signed up for a government funded arts program for unemployed youth. Led by the theater company, Theatre de Complicite, he embarked upon a creative journey studying Commedia dell'Arte and the works of Jacques Lecoq and Philippe Gaulier. At age 17, DeObia's thespian dreams were realized. Complicite, impressed by DeObia's talent, facilitated his entry into the acting profession, with a show at the Edinburgh Festival.

Leading roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre followed. In 1991 DeObia was cast in "Alien III," which led to a slew of roles on British television. After being cast as the lead in "Six Degrees of Separation" for the Sydney Theatre Company, DeObia was cast by Baz Luhrmann as Le Chocolat in "Moulin Rouge." More movies followed, including "Dark City," "Doom," "The Four Feathers" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." Other film credits include "Tula," "Little Devil," "Dredd," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Death Race 2," "The Presence," "Your Highness," "Legacy: Black Ops," "Mr. Nice," "The Code," "Depth Charge," "Thick as Theives," "Seven Seconds," "The Foreigner," "Thunderbirds" and "Doom Runners."

On televions, DeObia has appeared in BBC's "Way to Go," "Holby City," "Gallow Glass," "Between the Lines" and "Bloodrights"; the Australian telefilm "Answered by Fire"; Channel 4's "Metrosexuality" and "Desmonds"; ITV's "Trial and Retribution," "Minder" and "Medics"; and ABC's "Wildside."

In 2002 DeObia became a playwright when his first play, "Crazyblackmuthaf***inself," debuted Upstairs at the Royal Court Theatre. He also wrote "N*gger on the Lot" for the Royal Court Theatre. In 2008 DeObia, was nominated for the Best Lead Male Hollywood NAACP Award for his performance as the title role of "Gilgamesh," at the Boston Court Theatre, Los Angeles.

Other stage credits include "Giglamesh" at Boston Court Theatre in Los Angeles, "Angels In America" at Sydney Theatre Company in Australia, "Clubland" at Royal Court Theatre, "Cymbeline" for the Royal Shakespeare Company, "Death & the King's Horseman" at Manchester Royal Exchange, "Drums in the Night" at Leicester Haymarket, "Haroun and the Sea Stories" and "The White Devil" at Royal National Theatre, "The Broken Heart" at Leicester Haymarket, and "The Winter's Tale" at Theatre de Complicite.
