The Toledo, Ohio born hairstylist, who now resides in the hair capitol of the world Atlanta, Georgia, first tasted success at the young age of 20. During this time Derek was a stylist for major publications such as Black Men's Magazine, Today's Black Woman, Essence and Vibe. However, after two years in the fast paced life of the entertainment industry, Derek J decided to take a break and immersed himself into the world of hair shows.
The new world of hair shows proved to be the perfect environment for the creative hairstylist who immediately began winning the competitions he entered. In 2007 Derek won the prominent Bronner Brothers "Hair Battle Champion" award.
Derek J has is own salon called The J Spot Salon in Atlanta, Georgia. He is stylist to such celebrities as Nicole Ari-Parker, Natalie Cole, Terri Vaughn and Keisha Knight-Pulliam.
Now Derek J is back and brining his hair show extravaganzas to the entertainment world, one elaborate hairstyle at a time.
