Evelyn Stevens is a cyclist competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Few cyclists have risen through the professional ranks faster than Evelyn Stevens, a former Lehman Brothers associate who took up the sport less than five years ago. Worn out from 50 hour weeks on Wall Street, the former Dartmouth tennis player entered a bike race on a whim while visiting her sister in California back in 2007, and by the following spring she'd purchased an entry level road bike. After six months of spinning on the stationary in her cramped Manhattan apartment and riding loops of Central Park, she went on to win Vermont's vertiginous Green Mountain Stage Race in the amateur field. Today, she's a full-time cyclist with back to back national time trial championships and the reputation of one of the most promising female riders in ages. It's a career trajectory that seems as implausible as it is meteoric.

One of the crucial factors in determining a cyclist's potential is how much power they can generate over a given period of time. Coaches measure this output in watts, and turns out Stevens can generate a staggering amount. After impressing riders in Manhattan's fiercely competitive cycling circuit with her climbing ability, Stevens — then still a novice — was persuaded by friends to get her aerobic capacity tested. With minimal training, the 5'5", 120 pound Stevens was able to produce 310 watts over a five-minute period, a figure that was just 40 watts shy of a world class engine. Or 90 watts more than most endurance athletes her size.

While Stevens genetic gifts are apparent, her bike handling skills often don't match her motor. Even today, she still gets nervous in a pack and has been known to make mistakes in races, like misjudging a corner during California's Redlands Classic and crashing into top German rider Ina-Yoko Teutenberg. Additionally, Stevens has had difficulty cracking the top-3 in big international races. After beating former World Time Trial Champion Amber Neben and 2008 Olympic Time Trail gold medalist Kristin Armstrong to take her second national title in 2011, Stevens seemed poised for big things, but at the season ending World Championships in Denmark she only managed to finish a distant 15th in the event.

Of course the fast-learning 28 year old still has time to master the ins and outs of bike racing and the subtle art of peaking for key events. Which is why she's turned to Connie Carpenter-Phinney — the 1984 Olympic road race gold medalist — for advice. After being introduced to the legendary rider by a cycling mad coworker who'd attended one of Carpenter-Phinney's camps, the two became fast friends. Now Carpenter-Phinney is one of Steven's closest confidants, dispensing invaluable advice, while her son Taylor — a professional rider on Team BMC — is Steven's housemate during the off season in Boulder, Colorado. It's a close knit support system that plays in Stevens' favor — when she's not attending yoga classes or talking training and tactics with Carpenter-Phinney, she can be found glued to Taylor's wheel as he teaches her the fastest line down some of Colorado's most circuitous mountain roads. Look for those newfound skills and confidence on the bike to give Stevens an extra edge in London.
