Felix Gottwald is a nordic combined athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics for Austria.
Felix Gottwald re-entered the Nordic combined ring when he announced his comeback in May 2009 following a two-year hiatus. The 2001 overall World Cup champion witnessed 2009 Worlds while working for ORF, got first-row seating to watch the two-gold performance of another comeback kid, Todd Lodwick of the United States. Part of the bargain was that the Austrian federation would install his long-time personal coach, Guenther Chromecek, as assistant head coach to Baard Elden.
Heading into his fifth Olympics, Gottwald is already the most decorated Austrian Olympian and most decorated Nordic combined athlete in Olympic history. He has a chance to make more history in Vancouver. Currently riding a six-event medal streak, he could set the Olympic Winter Games record with medals in his first two events at Whistler Olympic Park, the normal hill individual and team.
Canadian speed skater Cindy Klassen, winner of medals in five consecutive events, could also challenge for the mark in 2010.
During his time off from the sport, Gottwald seemed to be convinced that the pen was mightier than the sword. He did not take a single ski jump, focusing solely on what he thought would be a post-career profession, in the media. He penned an autobiography called "Felix Gottwald - Ein Tag in meinen leben" (A day in my life), about his career, culminated with his victory in the sprint event at the 2006 Torino Games. He also traveled a lecture circuit, finished his degree in sports journalism and worked as a commentator for Austrian television channel ORF.
