James Magnussen is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Australia.

Australian James Magnussen became an international swimming sensation at the 2011 World Championships, where he won the 100m freestyle ahead of speedsters like Brent Hayden, Cesar Cielo and Nathan Adrian. Magnussen was also part of the winning 4x100m freestyle relay squad that beat France and the United States. Magnussen swam the leadoff leg in 47.49 seconds, the fastest ever time in a textile suit. 2012 Australian Championships, which served as the Olympic Trials, Magnussen clocked in at 47.10 seconds to lower his best time. He also qualified to swim in the 50m freestyle and will be on the relays in London.

After winning the 100m freestyle at the 2012 Australian Championships, Magnussen said he is targeting Cielo's world record of 46.91 this summer. "I feel pretty confident after that swim," Magnussen said. "I'm going to be doing everything within my power to break that world record, because I do want to be considered the fastest man in history." Magnussen claimed his time would have been faster had he not been sick in the days before the meet. "It probably caught me in that last 10 meters and shortened me up a little so hopefully if I can stay fit and healthy between now and London," he said.

Among Magnussen's nicknames is "Maggie," which is listed in the Swimming Australia media guide. The other, placed upon him by someone from Swimming Australia, is "The Missile." Magnussen backs up his aggressive moniker by talking boldly to the media about his talent. His agent Mark Jones told AFP that's part of Magnussen's tactics. "Psychology is a big part of it," Jones said. "The main thing is that you have to be good enough to walk the walk if you're going to talk it up. James's performances have obviously been very good and he has faith in his ability."

Magnussen lists his favorite drink as a protein shake and his favorite food is cereal … He started swimming at age 11 but did not become a serious national-level swimmer until 2010, when he moved to Sydney and began training with coach Brant Best.
