Janet Suzman stars in "Labyrinth" on The CW as Esclarmonde.

South African born Janet Suzman is an acclaimed actress whose long career began with a decade at The Royal Shakespeare Company culminating in a memorable "Cleopatra," and, more recently, directed "Hamlet" from The Baxter in Cape Town and played Volumnia, both for The Complete Works Festival.

Suzman has twice won The Evening Standard Award for stage work, and her film and television credits include "Sinbad," "A Dry White Season," "The Draughtsman's Contract," "The Singing Detective," Fellini's "The Boat Sails On," and "Nicholas and Alexandra," for which she was nominated for an Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award.

Suzman is a founding Patron of the Market Theatre, Johannesburg, where she appeared in its opening production in 1976, "The Death of Bessie Smith," directed by its late artistic director Barney Simon; and in 1987 she returned to direct her long-time colleague John Kani in "Othello." She has transposed "Good Person of Setzuan" to Johannesburg, and wrote a response to "The Cherry Orchard" set in post-apartheid South Africa for The Birmingham Rep.

During 2010 Suzman was involved in developing and performing in "Dream of the Dog" with Craig Higginson, and directed "Antony and Cleopatra" at the Liverpool Playhouse. She was also recently seen in "Solomon and Marion" at the Baxter Theatre Centre, Cape Town.
