Jessica Hynes stars in "Twenty Twelve" on BBC America as Siobhan Sharpe.

As both a writer and performer, Jessica Hynes has worked prolifically in television, film and theater. Born in Lewisham, South London in 1972, she was brought up in Brighton, Sussex. At school, she would write bizarre science-fiction stories. She joined the National Youth Theatre and left home to live in London when she turned 18. She landed her first major role in the comedy sketch show "Six Pairs of Pants," alongside Katy Carmichael and Simon Pegg, who recommended Jessica for a part on another sketch show, "Asylum," directed by Edgar Wright.

Hynes and Pegg became friends immediately and joined forces writing "Spaced," a sitcom about dysfunction among a group of strange twenty-somethings. Edgar Wright was brought in to direct and the show was filmed in 1998 in North London, during Jessica's first pregnancy. "Spaced" was an instant success and was commissioned for a second series.

Hynes moved on to work in films, winning two British Comedy Awards. She was nominated for an Olivier Award for her work in the play "The Night Heron" in 2001. She was also nominated for a Best Actress BAFTA Award for the film "Tomorrow La Scala." Hynes, Pegg and Wright were reunited for the film "Shaun of the Dead," in which Hynes plays Pegg's school-friend Yvonne. Hynes also starred in "Son of Rambow" and appeared in "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," opposite Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

Continuing to work in British television, Hynes starred in "Bob & Rose" and "According to Bex." She also had recurring roles in "The Royale Family" and "Doctor Who" and guest starred in "Little Crackers," "Skins" and "The Hours." Most recently, she starred in "One Night."
