Jordan Burroughs is a wrestler competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

All Olympic newcomers boast elite talent. Few have the sureness of 24-year-old American Jordan Burroughs. The 163 lbs (74 kg) freestyle wrestler, who will be making his Olympic debut in London, has a resume that suggests his confidence is well-founded. In addition to two NCAA Championships at the University of Nebraska, Burroughs is a Hodge Trophy winner, presented to the outstanding college wrestler of the year.

Burroughs' coming out party on the international scene happened at the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. After winning his Round of 32 match easily, Burroughs ran into Russian Denis Tsargush; the reigning two-time world champion in the division. After losing the first period, the American rallied, winning the next two to move onto the quarterfinals. Three victories later Burroughs was crowned the king of the 74kg class, just three weeks after his final college match.

Burroughs credits head wrestling coach Mark Manning at the University of Nebraska with giving him the idea that he could be a future Olympian. Young Jordan first watched the Games in 1996, where he saw Michael Johnson and Dan O'Brien. Before Burroughs reached All-American status in college, Manning convinced him that he could one day reach his sports' grandest stage.

With Russian superstar Buvaisa Saitiyev — the gold medal winner in 1996, 2004 and 2008 at 74kg — retired, Burroughs will have a chance to become the face of not just his weight class, but also Olympic Wrestling.

MMA stars Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar, Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes and Dan Henderson are just a handful of former NCAA wrestlers. Guard Stephen Neal, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots, was a four-time All-American wrestler in college. For many top college wrestlers, the promise of immediate fame and fortune at the professional level is enough to shun the Olympics and turn pro. But Jordan Burroughs is a different animal. "I think a lot of people go into mixed martial arts just because of the pay," Burroughs said during an October 2011 U.S. Olympic Committee teleconference. "Wrestling really isn't a lucrative sport, and the money's great in MMA. But it's something I'm not really passionate about. I love to wrestle."

Burroughs' hometown of Sicklerville, New Jersey has a population of around 45,000. A modest, middle class community, Sicklerville has produced a handful of top athletes. Among those is Burroughs and Shonn Greene, the former star running back at University of Iowa and current New York Jet. Both Greene and Burroughs went to high school together at Winslow Township.

For someone who prides himself on staying away from cauliflower ear, Burroughs had quite the wakeup call at Worlds. After going for so long without a noticeable case, he had his left ear explode on the mat after his opponent clubbed him in the head. Burroughs wrestled the rest of Worlds with his entire head bandaged.
