Justin Gatlin is an athlete competing in track and field at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Justin Gatlin was the elder statesman in London's 100-meter dash field, the only runner not in his 20s. But the 2004 gold medalist proved to be formidable competition, finishing third with a personal-best time of 9.79 seconds. Though Gatlin could not beat Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, his top speed put an American on the 100m podium.

Gatlin represented the United States at the Olympics for the second time in his career this summer in London, where he competed in the men's 100m. He is the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in the event.

Gatlin earned his way back onto the Olympic team with an impressive array of performances at the Olympic Trials. In the preliminary round, he clocked the fastest time out of the five heats by a considerable margin, running 9.90. His semifinal effort was a bit more reserved, resulting in a heat victory in 10.06, the third-fastest time of the round. In the final, Gatlin blasted to victory in 9.80, the fastest time of his career still on the books. It is also the fastest time ever run by a man over 30-years of age.

In November following the 2011 season, Gatlin appeared on the Japanese television show "Kasupe!" during which he ran a wind-aided 100m time of 9.45 seconds, which under normal circumstances would have been the fastest time ever run under any conditions. However, the "aid" in this case came from a large wind machine blowing at speeds over 25 meters per second. Gatlin received 2 million yen (approximately $25,000) for appearing on the program.

After a full off-season of training, Gatlin began to round himself into form during the 2011 season. The highlight of his season came at the U.S. Outdoor Championships, where he finished second in the 100m to Walter Dix in 9.95, his third sub-10 clocking of the year. He earned a spot on the national team and competed at the World Championships in Daegu, where he was eliminated in the semifinals after finishing fourth in his heat in 10.23.

Gatlin made his return from a four-year doping ban in August of 2010, when he won a low-key 100m race in Estonia in 10.24 seconds. He continued to improve and by the end of the summer, he got down to 10.09 in a runner-up finish to Yohan Blake of Jamaica in Roveto, Italy.

In June of 2006, Gatlin was informed by USADA that he had failed a doping test at a relay meet in Kansas. Two months later, he agreed to an eight-year ban from track and field, avoiding a lifetime ban in exchange for his cooperation with the doping authorities, and because of the "exceptional circumstances" surrounding his first positive drug test. The ban was reduced to four years in December of 2007 and his 9.77 performance in May of 2006 was annulled. Gatlin has maintained his innocence in the matter through the years.
