Kathleen Hersey is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Kathleen Hersey qualified for her second Olympics by taking the runner-up spot in the 200m butterfly. She finished eighth in the race at the Beijing Olympics. Hersey had a solid 2011 season, in which she won a national title and a gold medal at the Duel in the Pool, both in the 200m butterfly. A year before that, Hersey placed third in the event at the Pan-Pacific Championships.

Hersey's mother, Regina, died of cancer in January 2012. She had colon cancer that spread to the liver. "We took her to the hospital Christmas and she died January 4th, so it was relatively quick, but we didn't know it was coming. She had been sick for a while, and we tried a lot of treatments. It was a grueling sickness, and she never let it faze her, so that's also the perspective that I've been gifted with this past year," Hersey said at Trials in June. She referenced her "new" relationship with her mom now. "I feel like there was more than just swimming on the line. I recently lost my mom, and I felt like that was weighing heavy on my heart, and I felt like this wouldn't happen if there wasn't a reason, and I felt her presence so much today. All I wanted to do after my 100 fly (which she finished third in and did not make the team in) was give her a big hug, but the relationship has changed and it's much more intimate now, because she is a part of who I am."

Because she spends so much time on her butterfly stroke, which requires a dolphin kick, Hersey struggles with the other strokes — like the breaststroke, for example. At the 2011 Duel in the Pool, fellow American Brendan Hansen told the New York Times he is helping Hersey with her breaststroke kick, which resembles a frog kick. But the thousands of yards she swims every day doing the dolphin kick have made her feet point inward. "She walks around pigeon-toed all the time," Hansen said. "So to try to get her to catch the water with the inside of her feet by pulling them out is a real challenge." Hersey commended Hansen for helping her and said she tries sitting on her ankles to make them more flexible. She also works on the breaststroke kick much more during practice.

Hersey played basketball and tennis before picking up swimming as a kid, for which she now trains roughly 9,000 yards per day, six days a week. Her friends gave the nickname "Legs" because they say she is tall and has long legs. Hersey is just under 6 feet tall.
