Kristian Ipsen is a diver competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

After failing to qualify for the 2008 Olympic team, U.S. diver Kristian Ipsen turned around his results. Among his post-2008 highlights in the 3m springboard are victories at these events: 2008 Junior Nationals, 2009 Spring Nationals, 2010 Junior Nationals, 2011 Winter Nationals and the 2011 Nationals. On the international circuit, Ipsen and partner Troy Dumais have two victories and six second-place finishes dating back to 2009.

Ipsen's first major international competition was the 2009 World Championships in Rome, where he dove 3m synchro with Dumais. The pair actually beat the Chinese in the preliminaries and was seeded first entering the finals. In the end, the Americans finished just over 12 points behind the Chinese tandem of Qin Kai/Wang Feng and finished second. "It gave me the confidence and made me realize that I can compete with these people from different countries," Ipsen said of his 2009 Worlds experience.

Ipsen will 19 during the London Olympics, while Dumais will be 32. Ipsen and Dumais' other U.S. teammates call him "grandpa, or godfather sometimes," Dumais said. All jokes aside, Ipsen said diving with Dumais has been a huge asset to his career. "He's given me tips to kind of deal with [the mental part of diving], and also tips with my actual diving, different technique things."

Ipsen used to spend his summers working at his dad's pizza restaurants in California. Skipolini's Pizza has five locations, including one in Concord, Calif. – where Ipsen worked every day when it first opened. Ipsen was a busboy because he "didn't want to drop a pizza or do anything like that."

Ipsen went to De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif., a school known for its strong football program. The squad won 151 straight games from 1992-2004, a national record. As it worked out, however, Ipsen excelled at diving and won the Athlete of the Year award his junior year. "It was incredible," Ipsen said of the honor. "I didn't expect it at all." The private catholic school has about 1,000 students.
