LeBron James is a basketball player competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Superstar LeBron James makes his third Olympic appearance in London after helping the U.S. to a gold medal in 2008 and bronze in 2004. He was the team's second-leading scorer at the Beijing Games, where he averaged 15.5 points per game and led the team in minutes played (24:45 per game). An excellent all-around player, James also led the U.S. team in steals (19 in eight games), was second in assists (33) and third in rebounds (42). It was a lot more court time than he saw during the Athens Games, where, after one season in the NBA, he was among many late additions to the team that failed to win gold for the first time since 1988. James appeared in each of Team USA's eight games, but averaged only 11.4 minutes and 5.4 points a game.

After the 2004 Olympics, USA Basketball changed its selection process to focus on younger and more-devoted players, and James was one of the first stars to make the commitment. He was named a tri-captain for the 2006 World Championships, along with Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade. Yet, the U.S. won another bronze at the '06 Worlds with the new wave of stars at the forefront. But James was Team USA's best all-around player, averaging 13.9 points (third on the team), 4.8 rebounds (first) and 4.1 steals (second). Many of the same players, again led by James' versatility, won their first title at the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, in which the U.S. went 10-0 to qualify for Beijing. James averaged 18.1 points and a team-best 4.7 assists while shooting 76 percent from the field (73-of-96).

During the 2008 NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans, James made what few athletes do these days: an Olympic gold-medal guarantee. "We will be Olympic champions this year," he told reporters, adding, "Four years ago, I wasn't put in the position I could care. I didn't get to go out and play the way I could. This time I'm a captain and I know we are going to be a very tough team to beat." They were, in fact, the only team that didn't get beat. In January 2012, James essentially made another gold-medal guarantee when he said about the yet-to-be-announced London Olympic team, "We definitely can rack up with any of the Dream Teams that have been put together."

After seven seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers — the NBA team that drafted James and plays 40 miles from his hometown of Akron — James became the most sought-after free agent in league history. On July 8, 2010, he famously announced that he had chosen to "take my talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat." The sign-and-trade deal put him on a team with 2008 Olympic teammates Wade and Chris Bosh, and the Heat quickly became one of the NBA's best teams. The squad advanced to the NBA Finals in 2011 and 2012, with James winning his first NBA championship in June 2012. He also earned the NBA Finals MVP award.

James has been selected as an NBA All-Star in all but his rookie season, and twice has been named the All-Star Game MVP (2006 and 2008). He was voted league MVP after the 2009, 2010 and 2012 seasons, and was the NBA scoring champion in 2008. James has been named to the All-NBA team eight times (first team six times) and the All-Defensive First Team four times (2009-2012). Despite losing a lot of fans for the way he departed Cleveland, James had the best-selling NBA jersey after his first year with Miami, as he passed Olympic teammate Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, who held the No. 1 spot since the beginning of the 2008-2009 season.

After witnessing the greatness of Michael Jordan, NBA fans wondered if there would ever be a player like him. James may be as close as it gets — and he knows it, evidenced by the "Chosen 1" tattoo that runs across the back of his shoulders. Jordan is the reason James wore the number 23 for the Cavaliers, though James insists he's not trying to be like Mike. He says their games are very different, but James has already rivaled Jordan for the finest all-around NBA season ever. In 2007-08, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, James became the first player to average at least 30 points, 7.9 boards, 7.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocks per game in a season with a minimum of 70 games played. Jordan's finest was 1988-89: 32.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 8.0 assists, 2.9 steals and 0.8 blocked shots. Over his nine-year career, James has averaged 27.6 points, 7.2 points and 6.9 assists per game.

Never before has a player entered the NBA from high school with the notoriety of James, and he lived up to the expectations. The 19-year-old No. 1 overall draft pick in 2003 helped Cleveland more than double its victory total, from 17 to 35, and became the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 points in a game when he put up 41 against New Jersey. He finished the season among the top five rookies in all major statistical categories, leading in steals (1.65 per game) while placing second in scoring (20.9 points per game), third in assists (5.9 per game) and fifth in rebounding (5.5 per game). He joined Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan as the only rookies in NBA history to average more than 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. After the 2003-04 season, James became the youngest player ever to be named Rookie of the Year.

There was never any doubt about James being the best high school player in America in 2003. He was named the National High School Player of the Year and the Parade High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year as both a junior and senior, becoming the first repeat winner in the 47-year history of the Parade award. He was also named the USA Today and Gatorade Player of the Year during both his junior and senior seasons. A three-time Ohio Mr. Basketball, James led St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron to three state championships in his four high school seasons. For his career, James totaled 2,657 points, 892 rebounds and 532 assists. He also played football at St. Vincent-St. Mary until quitting his senior year to concentrate on basketball. A first-team all-state wide receiver as a sophomore, James helped the Irish reach the state semifinals his junior year.

Raised by a single mother, Gloria, James has two children of his own: LeBron James Jr. (born Oct. 6, 2004) and Bryce Maximus James (June 14, 2007). The mother of his children is Savannah Brinson, to whom James proposed on New Year's Eve 2011, one day after his 27th birthday. In 2004, James started the LeBron James Family Foundation, which focuses on helping children and single-parent households.
