Leslie Odom Jr. stars in "Smash" on NBC in the recurring role of Sam Strickland.

Leslie Odom Jr. was born in New York and grew up in Philadelphia. After making his Broadway debut in "Rent" at age 17, he graduated with honors from Carnegie Mellon's prestigious School of Drama — where his class included Josh Groban and Katy Mixon. In 2002, Leslie won a Princess Grace Award for acting.

Leslie has had recurring roles in ABC's comedy "Big Day," FOX's thriller "Vanished" and CBS's procedural "CSI: Miami." He has also made guest appearances in "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Grey's Anatomy," "The Bill Engvall Show," "Close to Home" and "Gilmore Girls."

In 2011, Odom starred in the ABC pilot for "Poe," a period crime procedural with supernatural elements that tells how some of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous stories came to be. The executive producer and director is Peter Berg.
