Lois Burwell serves as one of the judges in Syfy's reality special effects makeup competition series "Face Off." She joined the show in Season 7.

Lois Burwell was born in London, England, and began her career as a makeup artist by first working on film school films and low budget projects. Her first break into feature films came on Bill Forsyth's "Gregory's Girl" followed by Peter Greenaway's "The Draughtsman's Contract."

Burwell was responsible for Daniel Day-Lewis' transformative performance as Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln." An Oscar winner for "Braveheart" (1995) and nominee for "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), Burwell's makeup not only makes a believable Lincoln out of Day-Lewis, but also makes believable nineteenth century Americans out of every actor in the film. Through a subtle progression, Burwell is able to convey the tremendous toll the Civil War takes on Lincoln, so that when someone tells him he has aged ten years, audiences believe it. The film marks Burwell's fifth collaboration with Spielberg: they previously worked together on "Saving Private Ryan," "Catch Me If You Can" (2002), "War of the Worlds" (2005), and "War Horse" (2011).

Other feature film credits include "Collateral" and "The Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise, John Madden's "Captain Corelli's Mandolin," starring Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz, Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous," starring Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit and Kate Hudson, Paul Thomas Anderson's "Magnolia," Frank Darabont's "The Green Mile," starring Tom Hanks, "Hilary and Jackie," starring Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths, Francis Ford Coppola's "The Rainmaker," starring Matt Damon, Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element," starring Bruce Willis, Brian De Palma's "Mission Impossible," Brian Henson's "The Muppet Christmas Carol," "Hamlet" and "Air America" with Mel Gibson, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, Rob Reiner's "The Princess Bride," and Ridley Scott's "Legend."

When not on a film set, Burwell most enjoys gardening, caring for her animals, taking photographs and cooking. She and her husband split their time between Venice, California; Carpinteria, California; and London, England.
