Wife of Chris Rock and mother of their two daughters, Malaak Compton-Rock is known for her philanthropic work, turning her passion for helping others into styleWORKS, a nonprofit organization that helps women on welfare and in shelters get back on their feet and enter the workforce. A Howard University graduate, Malaak Compton-Rock began her career in public relations within the entertainment industry and created styleWORKS when she realized that she wanted to dedicate her life to helping others.
Malaak Compton-Rock has spent the majority of her career in the public relations and special event fields. Malaak Compton-Rock began her professional life in the entertainment industry, working for the prestigious Terrie Williams Agency, followed by a stint in the cosmetics industry. Malaak Compton-Rock found her true calling after accepting aposition at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund). During her two and a half years as Manager, Special Events and Celebrity Relations, Malaak Compton-Rock was fortunate to create, manage, and orchestrate numerous fundraising and advocacy events, geared towards increasing the organization's visibility and promoting private sector and corporate giving in the United States.
During her tenure, Malaak Compton-Rock managed the organization's roster of celebrity spokespersons, planning numerous international field trips for the spokespersons to witness UNICEF-assisted projects in the field. In addition, Malaak Compton-Rock coordinated all celebrity appearances at special events and with the media. Malaak Compton-Rock was also able to create a successful television product placement campaign for UNICEF's core fundraising campaign "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF," resulting in prime-time media exposure on television shows such as Caroline in the City, Mad About You, Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, and others. Malaak Compton-Rock achieved prominent placements in print and broadcast media, including Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, The Today Show, CNN News, USA Today, People and many others.
While still at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, Malaak Compton-Rock made the life-changing decision to dedicate her life's work to the non-profit world. Malaak Compton-Rock believes wholeheartedly that her life can only be fulfilled by working on behalf of other people. With that directive in mind, Malaak Compton-Rock left the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to pursue her dream of starting a non-profit organization. After witnessing the sweeping changes in the welfare laws, combined with her love of individual style, Malaak Compton-Rock decided to incorporate styleWORKS.
The organization provides comprehensive grooming services, i.e., hair styling, make-up application, skincare analysis/facials/waxing, clothing, accessories, and image consulting to women moving from welfare to work. WORKS also offers guidance on the interviewing process, mentoring, and job retention-based services. In addition, clients can enroll in the styleWORKS/PEN American Center Book Club, as well as smileWORKS, a program providing free dental care in partnership with the Columbia School of Dentistry and Oral Surgery.
Malaak Compton-Rock is an avid public speaker who enjoys lecturing on topics pertaining to renewing the inner spirit. Malaak Compton-Rock currently serves on the Board of Directors of Safe Horizon, the nation's leading non-profit victim assistance, advocacy, and violence prevention organization. Additionally, Malaak Compton-Rock serves on Marie Claire Magazine's editorial advisory board and is a member of the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health's Health and Beauty Council. In the past, Malaak Compton-Rock has also volunteered for the Gay Men's Health Crisis as a full-time HIV/AIDS emergency hotline counselor, RESULTS International, UNCF/The College Fund, The Creative Coalition, and has served on the Dance Theatre of Harlem's New York City Season 2000 Planning Committee. In January 2001, Malaak Compton-Rock was chosen as one of "Crain's New York Business" 40 Under 40, a prestigious yearly listing of New York's top young executives. Malaak Compton-Rock is a member of New York Women in Communications, Inc.
