Melissa McCarthy stars in "Mike & Molly" on CBS as Molly Flynn. McCarthy received an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in the show's first season.
Melissa McCarthy is best known for her role as the clumsy culinary genius Sookie St. James in "Gilmore Girls," and was most recently seen as Dena in the television series, "Samantha Who?" She also guest-starred on "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
On the big screen, McCarthy recently starred in "Bridesmaids," alongside Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne and John Hamm, "The Back-up Plan," "Life as We Know It," and John August's "The Nines," opposite Hope Davis and Ryan Reynolds. McCarthy also had strong supporting roles in the independent films "Just Add Water," starring Danny DeVito and Dylan Walsh, directed by Hart Bochner, and "Pretty Ugly People," starring Josh Hopkins, Missi Pyle and Allison Janney. Recently turning her creative attentions to writing, directing and producing, Melissa McCarthy created the short film "Polk Valley," and played the main character.
McCarthy first made her mark on the comedy stage, performing stand-up in New York at The Improv and Stand Up New York. At the same time, she received dramatic training from The Actors Studio in New York and starred in a variety of stage productions throughout the city. In Los Angeles, McCarthy spent nine years as a mainstage member of the world-renowned improv and sketch troupe The Groundlings.
Recently, McCarthy sold a movie pitch to Paramount Pictures for a story about a group of Midwestern women who set out to steal the Stanley Cup. Also, she completed writing a feature titled "Tammy," in which she will play the title role, and a television pilot, "Stage Mom." In addition, she is designing her first clothing line.
Since moving to Los Angeles, McCarthy's quick wit gets a workout almost every weekend as a member of The Groundlings Main Company, a world-renowned improv and sketch comedy troupe, where she also met her husband.
Born in Plainfield, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, McCarthy was raised on a corn and soybean farm. Currently, she lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two daughters.
