Peña has distinguished himself as an actor with a wide range of performances who has worked with an impressive roster of award-winning directors. Peña received notable recognition for his performance in Paul Haggis's provocative Oscar-winning film "Crash," alongside Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon and Terrence Howard. Peña's performance helped the critically acclaimed film to garner multiple best ensemble nominations and to win cast awards from the Screen Actors Guild and the Broadcast Film Critics Association, and also earned him an ALMA Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture from the National Council of La Raza.

Peña was also seen in "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done," for director Werner Herzog, "The Lucky Ones," co-starring Rachel McAdams and Tim Robbins; Robert Redford's political drama "Lions for Lambs," along with Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; and Antoine Fuqua's "Shooter," with Mark Wahlberg.

Peña also starred opposite Nicolas Cage in Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center," which chronicled the heroism of American servicemen in the direct aftermath of the September 11th attacks. His other film credits include Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Babel"; Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby"; Matthew Ryan Hoge's "The United States of Leland"; and Gregor Jordan's "Buffalo Soldiers."

On television, Peña was seen in the comedy hit "My Name is Earl," and starring in the HBO film "Walkout," based on the true story of a young Mexican American high school teacher who helped stage a massive student walkout in the mid 1960s. Peña received an Imagen Award for Best Actor in the television category for this performance, and was again nominated for an ALMA Award. He also guest starred on the FX drama "The Shield" during its fourth season, as one of the central leads opposite Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson. His additional television credits include Steven Spielberg's telefilm "Semper Fi."
