Nathan Adrian is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Nathan Adrian was one of the swimmers whose career has literally taken off since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He won gold as part of the 400m freestyle relay team at those Games, although he did not swim in the finals — those spots were taken by Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak. A year later, however, Adrian found himself swimming the anchor leg in the same race at the 2009 World

Championships ... a race the squad won after Adrian chased down French speedster Frederick Bousquet. The performance was similar to that of Lezak during Beijing. He also won gold as part of the 400m medley relay team after swimming in the heats.

Since the 2009 Worlds, Adrian's accomplishments include gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle at the 2010 Nationals and the Pan-Pacific Championships, along with 400m freestyle relay and 400m medley relay victories at the Pan-Pacs. Adrian won the 50m freestyle at the 2011 U.S. Championships and at the 2011 Worlds earned gold (400m medley relay) and bronze (400m freestyle relay) medals.

Adrian won the 100m freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials, giving him a spot in that race along with the 4x100m freestyle relay. He could have a role on the 4x100m medley relay as well.

Adrian was dubbed "the one to watch" before the 2008 Olympic Trials by two-time 50m freestyle gold medalist Gary Hall Jr. But Adrian's road to Beijing was longer than most: he had to swim one more race than the rest of the field. After the semifinals of the 100m freestyle, Adrian was tied for ninth, one spot out of the final. But Ryan Lochte, the fifth seed, withdrew from the event to focus on other races, opening up one more spot. Adrian then had a swim off against Alex Righi, which Adrian won by .09 of a second, getting him into the final. Once there, he made the most of the opportunity, finishing fourth in 48.46 and securing a berth on the 4x100m free relay.

After a year with coach Mike Bottom at Cal, Adrian took a year off from school and followed Bottom to Islamorada, Fla., to train with Hall at The Race Club. Bottom's Olympic resume is enough to impress anyone: he has coached the top two finishers in the 50m free at the last two Olympics (Hall and Anthony Ervin in 2000; Hall and Duje Draganja in 2004). Initially nervous, Adrian settled in to a rented five-bedroom, two-bathroom house with three other Race Club swimmers. He will be joined in Beijing by several of his training partners, including Draganja of Croatia, Salim Iles of Algeria and George Bovell of Trinidad & Tobago. Adrian graduated from the University of California-Berkeley earlier this year with a degree in Public Health; he trains there under coaches Greg Meehan and Dave Durden.

Adrian first grabbed the spotlight at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational held in early June 2008 at the Olympic Trials pool. There, Adrian won the 50m free, taking down the top three finishers in Athens: Hall, Draganja and Roland Schoeman of South Africa. "He's the kid. He's the one to watch,'' Hall said. "He's the whole package. He's got the strength, the feel, the technique and a good head on his shoulders.'' Adrian ultimately finished sixth in the 50m free at Trials, a little more than half-a-second from first. "I can't be upset with that. I'm only 19," Adrian said.

Adrian's mother, Cecilia, is Chinese and was born and raised in Hong Kong. She move to the U.S. in 1968 and met Adrian's father, Jim, at the University of Portland. Cecilia has never been to mainland China but gave all three of her children a Chinese middle name. Nathan's roughly means "little pony," which Cecilia explains is representative of "the most precious things one can possess." Adrian has an older sister, Donella, who swam at Arizona State, and an other brother, Justin, who swam at Washington. His nickname is "Bok Choi," given to him by girls on one of his swim teams after they discovered his Asian heritage.
