Nicole Barnhart is a soccer player competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA. The longtime No. 2 U.S. goalkeeper, she will back up Hope Solo for the second straight Olympics.

After shoulder surgery sidelined Hope Solo for the duration of the U.S. women's 2011 World Cup qualifying campaign, Nicole Barnhart saw the most extensive action of her international career. Over the course of 2010 and 2011, Barnhart played in 21 matches, starting 20 of them, and ammassing a 14-3-3 record while allowing a total of just 14 goals, all good enough for the U.S. to punch its ticket to Germany.

Barnhart was the third goalkeeper on the U.S. roster during the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, a tournament made famous by the Briana Scurry-Hope Solo controversy. She did not appear in a game in China. She started in one post-World Cup match, then took over as the U.S. number two for the Four Nations Cup in January 2008, as Scurry was given some time off. Her value really came to the forefront in April, as she helped lead the U.S. to the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament title with a thrilling, shootout win against Canada in the final. After getting arthroscopic surgery done on a troublesome knee in May, she returned to post a shutout in her only appearance at the Peace Queen Cup in Korea.

Barnhart made her women's national team debut in October 2004 at an unfamiliar position. Forward Angela Hucles rolled her ankle in the 81st minute of a match against Mexico during the "Fan Celebration Tour" dedicated to outgoing U.S. team members Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Joy Fawcett and Brandi Chastain. Having used the maximum allotted number of substitutions, coach April Heinrichs was forced to put back-up goalie Barnhart in Hucles' vacated spot up front. As the first goalie in U.S. WNT history to play in the field, Barnhart had a few touches in four-plus minutes as the Americans held off the Mexicans, 1-0.

Barnhart was a three-year All-Pac 10 goalkeeper at Stanford, posting a school-record 0.41 goals against average during her career there. She graduated in 2005 with a double major in studio art and psychology, then took a volunteer position as assistant coach at her alma mater before being called into the U.S. residency camp.
