Paul Dooley stars in Disney • Pixar's animated movie "Cars 2" as the voice of Sarge.
Paul Dooley was discovered in 1977 after twenty five years in show business. It all happened when legendary film director Robert Altman caught him on stage in the comedy "Hold Me" and cast him on the spot as Carol Burnett's husband and the father of the bride in "A Wedding." After another starring role in Altman's "A Perfect Couple," Dooley was cast as the long-suffering dad in the coming-of-age classic "Breaking Away." The role earned him a huge amount of acclaim, and set the stage for another triumph in the John Hughes comedy "Sixteen Candles."
Since then, Dooley has worked consistently, playing the father to some of the finest actresses in history, including Helen Hunt, Toni Collette, Mia Farrow, and Julia Roberts. His extensive film credits include "Paternity," "Kiss Me Goodbye," "Hpapy Texas," "Insomnia," "Waiting for Guffman," "A Mighty Wind," and "Popeye."
On television, Dooley received two Emmy nominations for his roles as an out-of-the-closet father on HBO's "Dream On" and a memorable judge on "The Practice." He starred in his own sitcom, "Coming of Age," and has played recurring roles on numerous other shows, including "Grace Under Fire," "My So-Called Life," "Stark Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Once and Again," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
Also a writer, Dooley was the co-creator and head writer of "The Electric Company," an Emmy Award winning childrne's program on PBS. He continues to perform on-stage in New York City, and in recent years has taken his talents to screenwriting.
His daughter, Savannah Dooley, is the creator of the ABC Family series "Huge."
