Petra Majdic is a cross-country skiing athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics for Slovenia.
Born as the lone girl between two brothers to father Peter and mother Vera, Petra Majdic was the only member of her extended family to fall in love with sports. According to her, when her younger brother Gasper was asked by a journalist if he would pursue sports, he replied, "You know, before Petra, no one played sports in our family. Now, after Petra, no one will play sports!"
In a 2009 interview with Swedish SVT, Majdic recalled as a little girl watching Russian skiers express very little emotion as they crossed the finish line in first place, and she became determined to be the exact opposite if given the opportunity. "If I ever would be on the podium, I would be screaming. If I would win, ... oh my god!" Going above and beyond her word, she "screamed like crazy" when she got her first World Cup points, for a 30th place in the 10km freesyle race in February 2000. Finishes between sixth and 14th place in her seven Olympic races in 2002 and 2006 did not elicit the same emotion, however, something that she hopes will change in 2010.
Following a great start to the 2008-09 World Cup season in which she made five straight individual sprint finals—and won three of them—Majdic underperformed at the World Championships, held in Liberec, Czech Republic. A heavy pre-race favorite in her marquis event, she was eliminated in the quarterfinal round and finished 13th. After the race, she claimed that she fell victim to a stomach virus. On a plus note, she finished the season with three more stage victories.
The two-time defending overall World Cup champion in the individual sprint, Majdic provides a simple formula for success for each race: "You start really fast, continue even faster and finish totally on the full! This is sprint. There are no tactics possible, especially if you compete in the women's category. We don't know tactics! We know only for full!"
