Qin Kai is a diver competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for China.

Qin Kai is the 2007 world champion on individual and synchronized springboard (with Wang Feng). He is the 2006 World Cup champion on individual springboard and the silver medalist in the individual event at the 2008 World Cup in Beijing, where he was defeated by teammate He Chong, who went on to win gold at the Beijing Games. Qin took bronze in individual springboard at the Olympics, while he and Wang won World Cup and Olympic gold in synchro springboard. In 2009, Qin won another synchro world title with Wang and also took gold on the non-Olympic 1m event. In 2010, he began competing with Luo Yutong. They paired to win gold at the 2010 World Cup and Qin finished second to He in the individual 3m competition. At the 2011 World Championships, he won another gold with Luo but placed fourth individually, with Russians Ilya Zakharov and Yevgeny Kuznetsov taking the podium spots behind He. At the 2012 World Cup, Qin placed second to exact a measure of revenge against his Russian rivals as well as Despatie, who was third. Also won his third consecutive World Cup synchro title and second in a row with Luo.

In an interview on Chinese television, Qin gave his thoughts about the sport: "When I was little, I told myself that diving was just jumping in the water, and then I started to realize that it's so hard to jump beautifully and especially to perform well in a competition. Diving blends a lot together, including your personality, character and style. I think it contains so many things and as people say that it's possible to judge who you are from how you dive. So I just feel that when I jump I have emotion in it."

In the same interview, his coach, Hu Enyong, described Qin's diving: "He's very talented. Apart from sports, he's very, very talented in many other things and he has excellent physical coordination, which I personally think is probably the best I've ever seen in my life. Every joint, every part of his body is really fantastic, and when he performs in the air, his brain goes very fast and sensible, which is utterly outstanding." Qin thinks his success is less the result of technical abilty and more the result of hard work. Of his win at 2007 Worlds, he says: "I felt that I am really satisfied with the result, which finally pays for all the practice and efforts been dedicated in diving for the past over 10 years. It seems like no matter who [China] sends out for competition will always win the world championship. But actually it's not that easy."

After winning his 2007 world title, Qin returned home to practice. On his second day back, he fell from the board while doing some jumping exercises and landed on his hand, which he says initially felt numb and then started to hurt. The injury, his coach recalls, occurred exactly 500 days before the Beijing Games. Qin says it took until the 390-day mark for his hand to feel fully recovered.

Qin started as a gymnast there at age four and switched to diving at eight. He has been diving with the national team since age 12. He likes soccer and basketball, both watching them and playing them. His favorite basketball player is Kobe Bryant, and Qin is also a Lakers fan. Qin takes time out to watch games when he can. His diving idol is Dmitry Sautin. Qin ejoys singing karaoke. He acknowledges that he's a little bit shy in public but says he's not that way with friends. Coach Hu agrees, "He can be very active when he's surrounded by people who he knows well, and with them he reacts even younger than his actual age. With those he doesn't know well, he's usually quiet. So he can be quite easy-going and sometimes he's just shy. He doesn't talk too much with strangers."
