Ryan Bailey is an athlete competing in track and field at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA, making his first appearance at the Games, where he will compete in the men's 100m and men's 4x100m Relay.

Runner Ryan Bailey earned his spot on the Olympic team with a surprise finish at the Olympic Trials. After finishing second to Tyson Gay in the prelims and third in his heat of the semifinals, Bailey sped to a third-place finish behind Justin Gatlin and Gay in the final in 9.93, the second-fastest time of his career.

Bailey, who stands 6-4, had a remarkable breakthrough season in 2010 in lowering his personal best in the 100m to 9.88 seconds from his previous best of 10.05 in 2009, and his 200m career best to 20.10 down from his previous PR of 20.45 in 2009. Bailey made his first big splash in April of 2010 at the UTEP Invitational when he finished a close second in the 100m to Churandy Martina, who placed fourth at the Beijing Olympics, before defeating Martina that same day in the 200m.

Bailey relocated to Illinois in January 2009 to attend Rend Lake College, one of the top junior college track and field programs in the country. He won the 55m at the National Junior College Indoor Championships and won the 100m and finished second in the 200m at the National Junior Outdoor Championships. His time of 10.05 was a personal best and a national junior college record. His 100m time made him the 13th fastest American sprinter in 2009. He turned pro that August, signing with Nike.

Bailey attended Douglas McKay High School in Salem, where he won the 2007 Oregon State Championships 6A titles in the 100m and 200m, and then went on to finish second and third over 200m at the Nike Outdoor Championships and USA Junior Championships, respectively. After graduation, he began studying part-time at Chemeketa Community College.

Bailey's upbringing was quite tumultuous. He did not have a close relationship with his birth father, and was forced to move frequently as his step-father was imprisoned. There was a stint when Bailey was even homeless. In school, he ran into disciplinary problems. Track remained his one passion but even that wasn't easy. His mother, Debra Galban, often couldn't afford to buy him new spikes and he even missed part of a high school track season from wounds suffered when he was attacked with a knife. "I am truly blessed right now," Bailey told the Statesman Journal. "When I was younger, it was not the best childhood, but I just realized I was on the wrong road, and needed to turn my life around. My family, my coaches and everyone around me helped me to do that."
