Sam Mikulak is a gymnast competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA. He is the 2012 U.S. bronze medalist and the 2011 NCAA all-around champion.

Sam Mikulak was named to the Olympic Team despite injuring his ankle the first day of Olympic Trials. The 19-year-old posted the highest all-around score that day, but during his final performance on vault Mikulak sprained his left ankle. He only competed on pommel horse the second day of Trials, but his strong all-around performances at Nationals and the first day of Trials were enough to earn him a trip to London.

He came seemingly out of nowhere to finish third at the 2012 U.S. Championships, the first Olympic selection meet. Mikulak's results came as no surprise to gymnastics insiders, but at his first senior Nationals he was a relative unknown to the general public.

Not only did Mikulak capture everyone's attention with his third place result at Nationals, but also due to a potentially dangerous incident on the parallel bars. In the chaos of prepping the apparatus before his routine, one of his coaches forgot to fully tigthen one of the bars. As Mikulak began his routine, the bar wobbled, sending a coach flying onto the podium mid-routine to tighten it. Mikulak, seemingly unfazed, completed the routine without hesitation and scored a solid 15.6 for his set.

He competed at the Puerto Rico Cup in July 2011 and after the first event, his Olympic dreams were suddenly in jeopardy. An awkward landing on floor resulted in two broken ankles, but the injury was not properly diagnosed until Mikulak competed on all six events that day. While his right ankle only required a two-week recovery, he was off his left ankle for six weeks. Mikulak used his rehabilitation to work on two of his weaker events, pommel horse and rings, and one year later it was hit routines on pommel horse that played a huge role in his Olympic selection.

Mikulak is a psychology major and will be the first American-born Univeristy of Michigan gymnast to compete for the U.S. Team at the Olympics. He achieved another significant first upon arriving at Michigan – becoming the first freshman to win the NCAA all-around title. For that accomplishment Mikulak was recognized on the field at The Big House during a football game in front of 110,000 people. He completed his sophomore year in Spring 2012 and one of his roommates, Syque Caesar, will also compete at the London Olympics representing Bangladesh.

When he's not in the gym, Mikulak likes longboarding, swimming, and tanning. "My friends and I [in Michigan] got one of those mini kiddie pools. We just sit outside and just drink Mate all the time." Due to his SoCal roots – teammate Chris Brooks has nicknamed him, "Hollywood."

The son of gymnasts (both went to Cal Berkeley), Mikulak was in the gym by two years old. Despite his parents experience in the sport, he says they never tried to coach him because they competed in the "old style." Mikulak says they don't get too nervous watching him, though when he was younger his mother walked out when he was on the pommel horse. They watch all his events now and Mikulak calls them his good luck charms.
