Scott Weltz is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Scott Weltz qualified for his first Olympic team by winning the 200m breast at the 2012 U.S. Trials. Prior to that result, he had never finished higher than fourth at a national championship. The London Games will mark his first major international competition. At the 2008 U.S. Trials he was 37th fastest in the 200m breast, so he's made significant progress in the last four years.

Weltz' coach to this day, Pete Motekaitis, was the only college coach to recruit Weltz out of Bellarmine Prep High School. Motekaitis was the coach at UC Davis, where Weltz swam for four years. But in 2010, his senior year, UC Davis cut the men's swimming team as part of budget cuts. Weltz was able to finish his season, but his was the last men's team to swim for the Aggies of UC Davis. Motekaitis became an assistant coach on the UC Davis women's team, and soon thereafter, Weltz joined as a volunteer assistant coach. Many questioned Weltz's decision, as training with Motekaitis meant he was essentially training alone, as there were no other Olympic-caliber swimmers present at the time. Weltz also helps Motekaitis coach the youth (ages 5-18) Aqua Monsters club in Davis. "I just enjoy coaching. I want to get my teaching credential. My mom is a teacher," Weltz said. After qualifying from the Olympics in Omaha, one reporter asked Weltz why he wears Davis on his cap if the school cut the men's team, why would he still promote the University. "I was able to graduate the year they cut it, but a lot of the guys weren't able to. I wear it for them. By wearing it I'm remembering all those guys.

Keeping with the underdog theme, Weltz says he finds inspiration in Herb Brooks, especially as portrayed in Miracle. Weltz watches the movie prior to major meets, something he says drives his girlfriend crazy. "I love that speech Herb Brooks gives. You know, what did he say? Play them 10 times, they might beat you nine. But not tonight. Not this time." He said that was his mindset going into the race in Omaha. Not Brooks, but Motekaitis told him prior to the race, "You're going to be mentally tougher than anyone else here at the Trials because you do this by yourself," referencing that he doesn't train at one of the mega-clubs where the elite congregate.
