Serena Williams is a tennis player competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA. She was previously one of the celebrity race car drivers on ABC's "Fast Cars & Superstars: Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race."

Williams has 20 career doubles titles to go with her 39 career singles titles that she has amassed over her 14 years as a professional tennis player. Her overall record (as of March 27) is 503-105 in singles matches and 153-20 in doubles play. Williams has five Australian Open titles, five Wimbledon titles, three U.S. Open titles and one French Open title.

Williams defeated her sister Venus to win her third Wimbledon title in 2009. The sisters then teamed up to win the women's doubles title at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. That same year, Serena and Venus won their third Grand Slam doubles title of the year and tenth of their career. Serena finished 2009 ranked world no. 1 for the second time in her career, having played in 16 tournaments, more than any other year. In her first Grand Slam tournament of 2010, Serena won the Australian Open singles title and she and Venus defended their doubles title.

In July 2010, Williams stepped on a piece of glass at a restaurant and the resulting injury required 18 stitches. The cut foot turned out to be a serious injury, requiring surgery and preventing her from playing for the remainder of 2010. Additional complications from the injury included a hematoma and a pulmonary embolism in March of 2011. She only participated in six tournaments throughout the 2011 season and she ended the year ranked world no. 12 with 2 titles and with a 22–3 record for the season.

Serena once again teamed up with her sister, Venus, to win gold in the Olympic doubles in Beijing. The sisters shrieked in unison and jumped for joy when they beat Spanish duo Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-2, 6-0. Playing in the singles draw at the Olympics for the first time in Beijing, Williams made it to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual gold-medalist Dementieva. Back in 2000, Serena teamed with Venus to win the gold medal in doubles at the Sydney Olympics.

In 2004, Serena had to pull out of the Athens Games because of a knee injury, meaning she and her sister Venus would not be able to defend their Olympic title in doubles. "It was a really tough for me to make that decision not to go to the Olympics, but at the end of the day I had to do it," Serena told the media at the 2004 U.S. Open. "I was advised by several — like five different doctors — not to go to the Olympics so ... it was pretty much, 'Don't go. Just don't go.'"

Anytime an athlete — especially in tennis — chooses to skip out on the Olympics, it's always met with a certain level of skepticism by some. But it's tough not to believe Serena when she said she was upset about not being able to go to Athens considering the two-time Wimbledon champion believes her 2000 Olympic medal to be the greatest trophy she owns. "By far, ... my most cherished trophy or anything, is definitely the gold medal," Williams told media members at the 2008 Australia Open. She continued on about her medal at the Sony Ericsson Open: "I keep it in a case in my closet. It's nice, because it means a lot to me. I love that I have a gold medal, almost seems surreal. ... I'm always trying to show it off. I think it's the coolest thing and always bite it. You can see I have little teeth marks from where it's been bitten. It's really cool. It's like my prize piece.

On a much different note in Miami, Williams and men's star Rafael Nadal debuted a court one might believe impossible — one played on water. Played on in a 110-foot swimming pool at the Gansevoort South Hotel, Nadal and Williams exchanged shots while standing on acrylic platforms attached to the pool's surface. Williams commented that Nadal was even nice enough to "play at the deep end" to help "level the playing field." The men's world No. 2 said he enjoyed the experience as it overlooked the ocean and because he, "loves playing on all surfaces."
