The film spawned a franchise and in 2004, Ashmore received the MTV Movie Award Breakthrough Male for reprising the role in Fox's blockbuster sequel "X2: X-Men United" directed again by Bryan Singer. Ashmore starred opposite an ensemble cast that included Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Anna Paquin. "Terry" documents the heroic life of Terry Fox, who after losing his leg to cancer ran entirely unassisted across Canada in 1980 in what was called the Marathon of Hope to raise money and awareness for the disease.
Ashmore also appeared in the leading role on "Earthsea," a fantasy drama for the Sci Fi Channel in the fall of 2004, starring alongside Isabella Rossellini, Danny Glover and Kristin Kruek.
