Stacey Cook is an alpine skiing athlete competing at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Heading into Vancouver, Stacey Cook has six Olympic and World Championship starts under her belt. The skier nicknamed "Cookie" cranked out her first top-10 finish at the 2009 Worlds, when she finished ninth in the downhill, while the other five results were in the low teens and twenties. Out of those six races, American teammates Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso rose to the occasion in four of them, winning three gold medals and one silver.
Cook took a low-key approach to skiing during her youth in California. Her father Dean started taking her to Lake Tahoe ski areas at age four, and her first races were organized by the local recreation department. She got serious about skiing after she won her first race as a member of the Northstar ski program. As a teen, Cook developed a little rivalry with a similarly-aged girl from nearby Squaw Valley, Julia Mancuso. The two former youth soccer teammates shared the prizes until age 13 or 14, when Mancuso really burst onto the scene.
Cook grew up playing many different sports, with skiing and gymnastics fighting for her strongest affection. She also enjoyed playing ball sports with her older brother Gary and younger brother Ryan. Gary went on to become a four-year starter (2001-2004) as a kicker/punter at UNLV, setting the school record for most career punting yards. After graduation, he was signed by the Oakland Raiders, where he lost out on a starting job to incumbents Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler.
As a teen, Cook switched allegiances to the Mammoth Mountain Ski Club, where she was given more opportunities to race in her favorite speed events. The club continues to support her in many ways. When funding issues forced the cancellation of the U.S. women's training camp at Mammoth in the spring of 2009, the resort helped leverage expenses for its locally-based skier during the men's camp. Cook was able to train with the men's team for a week and a half. That training could prove beneficial. Cook claims that the relief found at Mammoth resembles that of the Olympic venue, Whistler Creekside.
High on every Alpine skier's to-do list—alongside competing at the Olympics and World Championships—is an opportunity to participate in the World Cup Finals, a season-ending event/fest involving the top-25 skiers in each of four disciplines (downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom). Cook earned invitations to three consecutive Finals, 2006-2008, taking part in one race each yea.
Cook's family owns land in the Sacramento Valley that they use for hunting, harvesting fruit and environmental protection. The California Waterfowl Association funds a conservation project on the property that seeks to restore wetlands and waterfowl populations to previous norms. The land also has bountiful orchards of peaches, apricots, apples, "the hugest pears ever," grapefruit and a dessert melon that "is the most delicious thing" that keeps the self-acclaimed "country girl" happy during the summer months. Cook is also interested in duck hunting, which she claims is an important part of her environmentally-conscious attitude.
