Stephanie Rice is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for Australia.

In her Olympic debut at the Beijing Games, Stephanie Rice shattered the world record in the 400m IM to win gold in 4:29.45. Rice took nearly two seconds off the previous record, which was held by Katie Hoff, who finished third. Rice held off a late challenge from Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, who also finished well under the old mark to earn silver. The two dueled again in the 200m IM, with Rice touching first for her second gold medal and second world record. Rice then won her third gold, tying the Australian record for most golds in a single Games, on the 4x200m freestyle relay, setting her third world record. Rice will swim the 200m and 40m IM in London and will be a likely member of the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Rice, 19, headed into the 2008 Australian Olympic trials with high hopes, having spent a year among the top medley swimmers. But she surprised even herself with what she managed to accomplish. First, she broke the 400m IM record by taking six seconds off her previous personal best. Three days later, she broke the 200m IM record, which had been from 1997 and was the second-oldest on the books. Both swims were unexpected for Rice, who took bronze in both races at the 2007 Worlds. "It was a mammoth shock," she said.

Rice said she was inspired when her then-boyfriend Eamon Sullivan broke Alexander Popov's eight-year-old mark in the 50m free, even though she wasn't there to see it. Rice had gone home after the heats and found out about the record via text message from Sullivan. But she said the record made her realize that anything was possible — and even made her a little jealous. But Rice had her own record less than a month later.

After their success at Trials, where Sullivan and Rice each broke two world records, the two were dubbed Australia's 'golden couple.' They met at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and later began dating. They starred together in an underwear ad campaign in June 2008, but announced in early July that they had split in order to focus on competing in Beijing.

Rice recalls making the trip to Sydney in 2000 with her mom to watch swimming at the Olympics. At 10 years old, Rice admits she was "way off the pace," but says she was in awe of all the swimmers and dreamt of one day being there herself.

Rice was forced to withdraw from the 2010 Pan-Pacific Championships and Commonwealth Games with shoulder pain caused by an inflamed bursa. She had surgery in September of that year and after several months of rehab, returned to major meet action at the 2011 Australian Championships in April. Rice's results were strong considering the surgery she had: gold in the 400m IM, silver in the 100m butterfly, 20m butterfly and 200m IM. Later that year at the FINA World Championships, Rice earned a pair of bronze medals (400m IM, 400m medley relay).

Rice made headlines in Australia when several media outlets published pictures from her Facebook page that showed Rice having fun with fellow swimmers, including Sullivan. One of the photos, from a costume party, showed Rice dressed as a policewoman in a skimpy outfit (Sullivan was dressed as a sumo wrestler). Though the photos were relatively innocent, they seemed to portray Rice as a "party girl," and Swimming Australia responded by asking her to take them down. But as Internet photo scandals go, Rice's proved harmless. "It was a bit disappointing," Rice said. "But I wasn't too upset over it. I think that it was taken the wrong way, and everyone knew that the media was twisting it around."

After the Australian rugby team beat South Africa in a September 2010 match, Rice made a homophobic remark on Twitter ... which caused a backlash of problems for the swimmer, most notably the loss of her sponsorship from Jaguar — including an expensive loner she had been given by the company. Rice made a tearful apology to the media a few days after the Tweet appeared. "I owe it to those who I have offended to publicly say, I am sorry," she said.
