Tony Gunawan is a badminton player competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

In 2009, needing a partner, Howard Bach talked to his old partner Tony Gunawan and convinced him to give competitive badminton a go once again. They won the 2011 Pan American Games men's doubles gold medal and are currently ranked No. 20 in the world.

Gunawan moved to California in 2002 to study computer science and coach but he didn't get his green card until 2006. It takes three to five years after that to get U.S. citizenship, meaning he would be ineligible to compete for Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He became a citizen of the United States of America on September 6, 2011.

In 2005, Tony Gunawan — alongside then-partner Howard Bach — made history in winning the men's doubles title at the 2005 World Badminton Championships. It was the first ever medal for the U.S. in an Olympic or world championship event, as no American had ever surpassed the round of 16 in either before Bach and Gunawan ran the table.

A superb all-around player, Gunawan's versatility in doubles is unmatched. He won the 2000 Olympic gold medal, the 2001 World Championships, and the 2005 World Championships with 3 different partners.
