Tyler Clary is a swimmer competing at the 2012 London Summer Olympics for the USA.

Tyler Clary's biggest problem is that he's swimming in the same era as Ryan Lochte. The American, who will be 23 during the London Olympics, has second- and third-place finishes all over his resume — usually thanks to Lochte. At the 2010 Pan-Pacific Championships, Clary's three podium finishes were silver medals in the 200m backstroke and the 200m/400m individual medley. Lochte won all three of those races. "Tyler, it's like he's never going away," Lochte said at the time. "He has definitely stepped it up, which is good for the sport. You know when you race him it's going to be a dog fight."

Clary says his interest in racing and going fast stems from an episode when he was a young child. During a car ride with his grandmother behind the wheel, a car passed them and Clary was upset. His grandmother stepped on the gas and drove past the car, which brought a big smile to Clary's face. Ever since he's been able to drive, Clary employs the same lead-foot approach. "Yeah, I drive a little fast," he said.

Clary came up just short of qualifying for the 2008 Olympics, finishing third in the 200m backstroke and fourth in the 400m IM. With more experience and plenty of silver medals hanging from his mantle, Clary is a favorite to make the London squad. And, moving forward, he could be one of the top guns on the U.S. team when Lochte decides to step away from the sport.

When he's not swimming, Clary can usually be found in his garage working on his truck or at an off-road race. In 2011, Clary tricked out his 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Special Edition with a custom light bar, bigger tires and a host of other features. He kept his fans updated on his Twitter feed, where he uploaded photos of his progress. When his swimming career is over, Clary wants to get involved in off-road racing or F1. "I just can't think of a whole lot of things that would be more fun than flying through the desert at 140 miles an hour," he says.
