Ven Budhu from "Project Runway" is one of the contestants in Season 10 of the Lifetime reality fashion design competition series. He is a 28-year-old designer who grew up in Berbice, Guyana, and is currently living in Kew Gardens, New York.
Ven Budhu ("Project Runway") always has had an interest in women's dresses. He says, "My sister always reminds me of stories when I was about 5 or 6 years old. She said I used to have her or my mom buy me large sheets of white oak tag craft paper at the local store. I would literally sit on the floor, look at the VHS cover of the classic animated movie 'Beauty and the Beast' and draw Belle's gown in full-scale, with some embellishments of course. I think I officially knew I wanted to design when I was in elementary school. A passion for evening dresses were evident at a very young age." The first garments that he ever made were a group of seven sequins-and-satin evening dresses when he was a freshman in high school for the annual student fashion show.
Budhu graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in womenswear. He spent his third year of college attending Polimoda in Florence, Italy. He won Designer of the Year - FIT graduating class of 2006 and the Critic Award from designer Reem Acra. He was also a Cotton Inc. winner for evening wear and a Saks Fifth Avenue winner for womenswear. In addition, he took third place from FGI Fashion Group International for women's ready-to-wear.
He says, "I think my strength as a designer is that I have the 'taste and eye' for design which is something that you cannot learn or acquire. I think these are elements that you are born with. This is what I was born to do and what was meant for me will happen. As Michael Kors would say, you either have it or you don't."
For Budhu, designing is about capturing an attitude, a feeling or an emotion — and as a result, creating a stunning visual impact. While he's designing, he likes listening to New Age music and a mixture of instrumental ethereal trance. He enjoys music that provokes a mood — a fantasy.
Budhu has a passion for designing extravagant gowns. He loves Roberto Cavalli, for his edgy, bold, luxurious over-the-top sensibility, and Michael Kors for his clean, chic American sportswear. Budhu's favorite style icon is Jennifer Lopez, and his super model muses are Heidi Klum and Kate Moss.
